In 1883 the town of Cheney, Washington was incorporated. It was named for Benjamin Pierce Cheney. The Cheney Community experienced many names as it grew, all of which were influenced by the railroad, education, and agriculture.
To begin with Cheney, Washington was simply known as Section Thirteen. This soon was changed to Willow Springs which was then changed to Depot Springs. The president of the Northern Pacific Company influenced the next name with his last name, Billings. The Director of the Northern Pacific Railroad, Benjamin P. Cheney won out, however, when the area was finally name Cheney in his honor.
Location Cheney, Washington is located in Spokane County. Its regular population is outnumbered by the amount of college students attending Eastern Washington University, but the small town life is appreciated and enjoyed by all. The proximity of metropolitan Spokane makes living in Cheney even more enjoyable due to the closeness of big city shopping, activities, and the like. Spokane is only 17 miles away from Cheney.

Education Cheney is home to Eastern Washington University. The NCAA division one university has an interesting history and has evolved significantly over the years. Today it is an outstanding university with various satellite campuses and more than 10,000 students.
Air Force The Fairchild Air Force Base is located approximately seven miles from Cheney, Washington and many of those that serve make their home with their families in Cheney. The aircraft and personnel at Fairchild Air Force Base lead the way with the refueling of the tanker fleet on the West Coast. Fairchild personnel and aircraft played a key role in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM not to mention the Cold War before that.
