History The history of Deer Park is certainly interesting. Back in 1889 Washington became a state and William Hopkins Short and his brother in law George Crawford saw a need in the area. The railroad was being built that would one day reach Canada, so the two entrepreneurs rented a saw mill that was portable and set it up in a densely wooded area about 25 miles north of Spokane. The railroad workers had begun calling the area “deer park” simply because of the abundance of white-tailed deer in the area.
There was nothing close by to Deer Park in those days, just some other homesteads and prairies. So, Short and Crawford decided to create a town. The petition for the Deer Park town site was filed in 1899 and by the time the city was incorporated in 1908 the population was 1000. The population of the next century would see that number tripled with the continued growth of Deer Park, Washington.
